Home-Based Relief That Works While You Walk

When pain affects your knees, hips or lower back, finding time for another appointment or exercise session can feel difficult. A home-based approach offers a simpler option: work on the way you move while carrying on with the things you already do.

Apos® is designed to be worn at home for around one hour a day. It is a personalised, foot-worn medical device that works with your walking pattern, helping to change how forces move through your body as you take each step.

There is no need to set aside a whole afternoon, travel to a clinic every day or build your life around treatment. With guidance from an Apos® clinician, the device can become part of your normal routine.

Make treatment fit your life

A home-based treatment is easier to maintain when it works around your day.

You may wear Apos® while walking around the house, preparing a meal, doing light household tasks or moving between rooms. The aim is not to turn your home into a gym. It is to use everyday movement as part of a structured treatment programme.

This matters because walking is repeated thousands of times throughout normal life. Each step gives your body information about balance, pressure and movement. A carefully adjusted change to the way you walk can therefore become part of a practical, consistent routine.

Your clinician will explain how to introduce the device and how long to wear it. Some people begin with shorter periods before building towards approximately one hour a day. The right approach depends on your assessment, your walking ability and the treatment plan created for you.

A personalised approach to every step

No two people walk in exactly the same way.

Your posture, leg alignment, foot position, muscle control and previous injuries can all influence how weight travels through your body. Even when two people have similar knee or hip pain, the movement patterns contributing to that pain may be different.

That is why Apos® is calibrated for the individual rather than supplied as a standard, one-size-fits-all insert or shoe.

The device includes small biomechanical pods attached to the sole. Their position and configuration are adjusted during a clinical assessment to influence your centre of pressure and the way your foot meets the ground.

In simple terms, the device is designed to support two connected processes:

Redistribution

Apos® helps shift pressure away from areas that may be painful or overloaded. This can change the forces travelling through the knee, hip or lower back during movement.

Re-education

The pods also create a controlled change in the way your body responds to each step. Over time, this may help your muscles and nervous system practise a different walking pattern.

Together, redistribution and re-education form the basis of Apos® treatment. The device is not simply designed to cushion your feet. It is intended to influence the way your whole body moves.

More than support while you wear it

Many treatments focus on making movement more comfortable in the moment. Apos® also focuses on what happens as you move repeatedly over time.

The controlled changes created by the pods can encourage your body to adjust its balance, muscle activity and walking pattern. This is sometimes described as gait retraining. Gait simply means the way you walk.

The purpose of gait retraining is to help your body practise a more comfortable and efficient movement pattern. The potential value is not limited to the time the device is being worn; the treatment is designed to support changes in how you move during everyday activity.

This does not mean that you need to walk in a completely different way overnight. The process is gradual and guided. Your clinician can review how you are progressing and make adjustments when needed.

One hour can be easier than you think

An hour may sound like a long time until it is divided across familiar activities.

You could wear Apos®:

  • While walking around the house in the morning
  • During light household jobs
  • While preparing lunch or dinner
  • When moving between rooms during the day
  • During an evening routine at home

The important point is that Apos® is intended to be used during normal movement, rather than requiring a separate exercise session. You can continue with simple, everyday activities while the treatment works with your walking pattern.

Some people prefer to complete their hour in one period. Others find it easier to divide the time into shorter blocks. Your Apos® clinician will advise you on how to use the device safely and comfortably.

A non-invasive option for ongoing pain

Apos® is non-invasive and drug-free. It does not involve injections, surgery or a complicated home exercise programme.

This can make it an option for people who have tried standard approaches but still find that pain affects walking, exercise, work, sleep or daily independence. It may also be considered by people who want to explore a non-surgical approach alongside other care.

For knee osteoarthritis, Apos® is a NICE-recommended medical device within the appropriate clinical context. It is assessed and provided through trained professionals, who consider your symptoms, medical history, mobility and treatment goals.

Apos® may be available privately, through insurance or through NHS services in areas where it is commissioned. Eligibility and access depend on your individual circumstances and local arrangements.

Who might benefit from a home-based approach?

A home-based, movement-focused treatment may appeal if you:

  • Have ongoing knee, hip or lower back pain
  • Find that pain changes the way you walk
  • Want to stay active without adding another demanding appointment
  • Prefer a non-invasive and drug-free option
  • Have not had enough improvement from standard care
  • Want support that fits around your usual routine

The first step is an assessment, not a commitment. An Apos® clinician can discuss your pain, movement and goals, then explain whether the treatment may be suitable for you.

Keep moving towards what matters

Pain can make movement feel like something to manage carefully. A home-based approach offers another way to think about treatment: small, guided changes practised through the movements you already make.

Apos® combines personalised foot-worn biomechanics with approximately one hour of daily use at home. It is designed to redistribute loading, re-educate walking patterns and support movement as part of everyday life.

You do not need to put your plans on hold while you begin. Start with a simple conversation about how you move, what your pain is stopping you from doing and whether a personalised approach could fit into your routine.

Take the first step towards moving more comfortably at home.
